With the popularity explosion of vintage watches over the past couple years, watches once known as great values are starting to dry up and prices rise and quality examples get stuffed away in safes. One of the few great values still kicking around at affordable levels are the Nivada Grenchen and Croton Chronomaster Aviator Sea Divers. Croton, NV’s company name for the United States, launched the Chronomaster line in the 1960s and its popularity led the model to be produced into the late 1970s. With a modern 38mm size, manual wound chronograph movement, and clean well proportioned dial, it’s no wonder the Chronomaster Aviator Sea Diver was popular in its time and still popular today.
Our example is powered by the Landeron 248 movement, leading to a unique experience in operating the chronograph, as the top pusher is used to start the chrono but the bottom pusher is used to both pause and reset the mechanism. Although these were designed for heavy use and many examples show just that, the case on this watch is very clean with no dings, dents, or even heavy scratching. The case shows its original chamfers. A near perfect dial and handset along with a clear domed acrylic crystal top off a great example of this ready to wear vintage tool watch.
Case: 38mm stainless steel case in excellent condition. The case is extremely clean with only very light wear as shown and the case retains its original chamfers. The crown appears to be a replacement signed Wittnauer and the pushers appear original as well.
Bezel: 60 minute bidirectional timer bezel in good vintage condition with minor scratching and color fading as shown. The bezel overall has faded to a great charcoal color that contrasts with the dial nicely.
Dial/Hands: Original dial and handset in excellent condition as shown. The tritium in the hour plots and hands have faded to a great even creamy patina with only very small spots of discoloration. The minutes subdial features a highlighted red countdown area for regatta timing, and the printing all shows a heavy serif with a cool vintage feel.
Caseback: Original solid caseback in excellent condition with only minor wear around the edges of the tool grooves. Caseback is marked with the serial number 903006 and reference number 105 9816. The caseback has the same heavy serif font as the dial.
Crystal: Domed acrylic crystal in like new condition with no scratches, scrapes, chips, or cracks.
Movement: Original Landeron 248 manual wind chronograph movement in excellent condition. Movement is extremely clean and all functions work as they should including the chronograph start, stop, and reset. The watch keeps very good time although the service history is unknown.
Bracelet/Strap: New distressed leather bomber jacket style strap with SS buckle.
Accessories: None, sold as watch only.
