It’s not a Mark IV, it’s not a Mark V. So what is the “MK4.5” Ref. 176.0012 Speedmaster? Simple. It’s a relatively uncommon model released in 1974 that uses the case of the Mark IV and the movement of the Mark V, the Omega caliber 1045, bridging the gap between the two models.
The caliber 1045 is essentially a rebranded Lemania 5100, a total workhorse of a movement developed in the 70s to combat the mounting quartz crisis. The unique layout and signature “airplane” central minutes counter have become unmistakable attributes of this durable piece of kit, used throughout the watch world in tool watches of the 70s and 80s.
Back to the Mark 4.5. It’s stainless case calls back to the first in the Speedmaster Mark series, with similar proportions and finishing to the Mark II, with a slightly taller bezel to accommodate the thicker automatic movement. This model also has a unique caseback in that it’s marked with Seamaster text, but is undoubtedly a Speedy.
The matte black dial has the familiar tritium stick hour markers, along with a day and date window in contrasting white and 5-minute interval minute markers as all in the Mark series since the III. There’s also a whopping 7 hands on the dial, which thanks to the c. 1045’s layout somehow stay incredibly legible.
We’re proud to offer this excellent example of a unique piece of Omega and Speedmaster history.
