On March 3rd, 1969, Heuer made history by holding a press conference unveiling the world's first automatic chronograph movement. While this is a point still contested to this day between the Caliber 11, the Zenith El Primero, and the Seiko 6139, many still consider Heuer to be the first to the finish line in launching their movement. The caliber 11 was a joint venture between Heuer, Hamilton-Buren, Breitling, and movement designer Dubiois-Depraz. The movement was introduced instantly to a number of watches but some issues with the movement arose, leading to a revision of the movement first to the Caliber 11i, then to the Caliber 12.
By the time the movement had been sorted out, The partners started contracting these automatic chronograph movements out to other watch manufacturers. Bulova ordered a number of these movements and made a handful of models in line with the funky designs of the early 70s, including a large bullhead and the type you see here, designated model "F". The movement was renamed to the Bulova Caliber 14EFAD for use in their watches but was otherwise identical to the Caliber 12.
It seems that few of these chronographs have stood the test of time as these automatic Bulova chronographs seem to seldom surface.
Fortunately, we've sourced one in excellent condition with a beautiful four color dial. We've added a new OEM replacement crystal (who would have known NOS parts would still be kicking around for a model like this?) for a crystal clear view of that wonderful dial and a new caseback gasket to keep the Cal. 14EFAD sealed away from the elements. Other than these sympathetic and preservative adjustments, this watch is as original as can be and ready to be strapped on to a new wrist.
Condition is per the photos and as follows:
Case: 44mm diameter stainless steel case (43mm lug to lug) in excellent vintage condition. The case has been well preserved with sharp edges and crisp, deep grained brushing. The polished case surface shows some minor wear with scratches, scuffs, and small nicks but is free of any eye sores or major dings/dents/scratches. The pushers and signed crown all appear original with the exception of the spring only on the reset pusher.
Bezel: Internal fixed base 200 tachymeter bezel in mint condition with no missing paint, fading, or chips.
Dial/Hands: A very unique and interesting four color dial in outstanding condition. The center section is a metallic blue, with a large tan segment leading to a white outer ring with red second intervals. The subdials have three rings alternating in tan and white with black print. The date disc is a metallic silver.
Crystal: Newly replaced OEM Bulova acrylic crystal.
Movement: Bulova caliber 14EFAD based on the Heuer caliber 12. All movement functions work perfectly including the chronograph start, stop, and reset to zero. The watch keeps great time, but service history is unknown.
Strap: 22mm blue sharkskin strap in like new condition with an SS buckle.
Accessories: None. Sold as watch only.
