Rolex is known for being an innovator, and the Datejust is a great example of the achievements of Hans WIldorf. After debuting the Osyter water and dust resistant case in the late 1920s, Rolex also was the first to add the date to a wristwatch, and in 1945 the Oyster Perpetual Datejust was born. It's become an icon, a perfect blend of dress and sport, and is still in production mostly unchanged today. Rolex is also no stranger to precious metals and the brand's reputation hangs on the back of the luxury and prestige precious metal Rolexes embody. A gold Rolex has been a sucess symbol for decades.
But what's best about a gold Rolex, especially a vintage piece, is it's still a tool watch that doesn't lose any of the token robustness Rolex has become synonymous with. It's still built tough as nails, it's still got a water resistant Oyster case with a screw down crown, and it's still got a chronometer rated in-house automatic movement that's likely to outlast its owner.
The Datejust you see here is from the early to mid 1960s; unfortunately the serial number has been worn down over time and is no longer legible, however it's still possible to approximate the production date since the watch has the older hour hands and not the later stick hands. It's powered by the caliber 1560 movement.
Take a look at the photos and our condition description as follows:
Case: 36mm 18k yellow gold case in good vintage condition. The case has previously been polished. There is minor surface scratching and nicks present throughout commensurate with wear but the case is free from any major eyesores. The crown screws down smoothly.
Bezel: 18k bezel in very good vintage condition with deep fluting.
Dial and Hands: Original dial and hands. The dial is a champagne color with "doorstop" markers. The dial shows some light spotted patina throughout. Lume plots are intact and the lume dots have faded to an even creamy patina. Hands are original arrow style with luminous inserts that match the dial.
Crystal: Like new replacement acrylic crystal free from scratches, cracks or chips.
Caseback: Solid 18k caseback in good vintage condition as shown, with reference and gold markings present.
Movement: Rolex caliber 1560 automatic movement in excellent condition, All functions work as they should and the date changes over at midnight. The watch is keeping excellent time although the service history is unknown.
Strap: Like new vintage style leather strap.
Accessories: None. Sold as watch only.
