History was made on July 20th, 1969 when NASA astronauts first stepped foot on the moon. And strapped to the outside of their space suits was the Omega Speedmaster, a watch synonymous with the moon landing and arguably one of the most important watches ever made.
Omega of course wanted to commemorate both mankind's achievement and their involvement in the space program. Their first commemoration of their collaboration with NASA came with adding "Professional" to the dials from the 145.012 onward when the watch was selected by the space program. The next was to commemorate the moon landing with an inscription on the caseback. Omega replaced the simple large Hippocampus and Speedmaster text with "The first watch worn the moon" written staight across the caseback, giving this model its nickname.
These straight writing casebacks came in two variations, with and without the "Apollo XI 1969" text engraved around the edge of the caseback step. The former, which you see here, was produced in significantly lower quantities than the other, already relatively limited, configuration.
Here we're offering an excellent example of the more scarce version, appearing entirely original with a crisp case and very nice patina on the stepped dial, along with the original optional reference 1116 bracelet.
Take a look at the photos and description below for condition on this great vintage Speedy.
Case: 42mm stainless case in excellent condition with only very minor signs of wear. Case is extremely crisp with sharp lugs.
Bezel: Black tachymeter bezel in excellent condition with no dings or dents. There are some small spots of wear on the bezel insert pictured. Bezel is DNN configuration, correct for this reference and serial no.
Dial/Hands: Original stepped tritium dial with even creamy patina. Hands are also original tritium and have a darker patina.
Caseback: Straight writing caseback in the rare "Apollo XI 1969" variation in excellent condition. Engravings are deep and crisp with no missing paint and no tool marks on the caseback cutouts. Marked 145.022-69 inside.
Crystal: OEM Hesalite crystal in excellent condition with few minor surface swirlies.
Movement: Caliber 861 hand wound chronograph movement. The movement is in perfect condition and keeping great time all functions working as they should. The chronograph has crisp pusher action and resets to zero. 31.6 million serial number dates production to approximately 1972.
Bracelet/Strap: Original OEM Omega 1116 bracelet in excellent shape, very tight with only minor wear on the link surfaces and the clasp. Bracelet should fit wrists up to 7.5" easily.
Accessories: None. Sold as watch only.
