Chances are you know the story behind what is arguably the most important and historically significant watch of all time. Luckily for enthusiasts, it's also quite easy on the eyes. A balanced tricompax layout, simple black and white color scheme, large hour plots and contrasting hands have made the watch not only a space travel icon but a design icon as well. Omega knows a good thing when they see it which is why the Speedmaster has gone largely unchanged since its 1957 inception.
That iconic dial is often a focus on vintage models, and this 1976 Speedy is worth a closer look. It's got perfectly matching hour plots that have faded to a creamy patina, free from dark spots, flaking, and discoloration. The hands also perfectly match the plots, a rarity seeing as the hands tend to darken a bit more or even turn completely black. Pair the mint matching dial and hands with a very clean, sharp case and a crisp bezel and baby, you've got a stew going.
Be sure to check out the photos and our condition rundown below for all the details.
Case: 42mm case in excellent condition. The case appears unpolished with sharp edges and crisp transitions between the brushed and polished surfaces. The case shows minor surface scratches and nicks commensurate with wear and age but all wear is very light.
Bezel: Original tachymetre bezel in excellent condition with no areas of heavy wear or missing paint.
Dial/Hands: Original dial and hands in mint condition with beautiful even creamy patina on the hour markers and hands. There are no cracks in the hands or missing areas in the lume plots on the dial. The plots do still slightly glow when exposed to a light source.
Caseback: Original moonwatch caseback in very good condition with only very minor wear. All paint in the moonwatch engraving is intact.
Crystal: Like new OEM Omega hesalite crystal with no scratching, chips, cracks, or marks. Omega symbol in the center.
Movement: Caliber 861 movement in excellent condition. Movement is very clean and all functions work as they should, with the chronograph starting, stopping, and resetting to zero as expected. Movement is keeping good time. Service history is unknown. The movement serial number is 39.9M indicating production circa 1977.
Bracelet/Strap: Original Omega 1171/1 bracelet in very good condition as pictured. Bracelet is sized for a 7.25" wrist and does not include extra links.
Accessories: None. Sold as watch only.
