Yema is a lesser known French brand founded in 1948. Most of their offerings fly under the radar and have not picked up steam with collectors, save for a few signature models like the Sous Marine, Flygraf, and their most revered watch, the Yachtingraf.
The Yachtingraf debuted in 1966, a Valjoux powered chronograph with a unique patent-pending large regatta timer at 3 o'clock. The oversized colorful subdial has become the signature feature of the Yachtingraf, and the splash of bright color contrasting the black dial makes for a beautiful look.
The Yachtingraf went through a handful of evolutions until it arrived at its final configuration, only produced in 1970, which you see here. The large, colorful subdial from the first models was replaced with a rotating disc below the dial to be used as a regatta countdown timer. The disc advances every 30 seconds, counting down the 15 minutes to the start of the race with red and blue sections of the rotating disc.
This final iteration of the Yachtingraf is one of the most interesting and unique chronographs ever made. We have quite the affinity for unique chronographs, especially those used for specific purposes (like the Omega Soccer Timer) as they are a callback to an analog time where watches were used as genuine tools.
The Yachtingraf pictured here is in wonderful condition, with a sharp unpolished case with large chamfered lugs, a very modern 39mm size, and a gorgeous multicolored dial.
Take a look at the photos and our condition description below on this great Yachtingraf.
Case: 39mm stainless steel case in excellent condition. The case shows only minimal signs of wear and appears unpolished with all case lines crisp and sharp. There are no significant dings, dents, scratches or other detractions in the case.
Bezel: Original Bakelite bi-directional bezel. The bezel turns freely. Some areas of the insert show internal wear as pictured as is common with Bakelite bezels, but the surface is clean and smooth, and the bezel retains its readability.
Dial/Hands: Original dial and hand set in excellent condition. The dial is a gorgeous charcoal color with a stark black running seconds subdial, "white sail" boat a 6 o'clock with Patent Pending, and the signature Regatta timer at 3 o'clock. Hour markers are applied with original tritium that has faded to a deep creamy color that matches the hands.
Caseback: Original steel caseback with sharp engravings and light wear as pictured.
Crystal: Excellent acrylic crystal free of any major scratches.
Movement: Manual wound Valjoux 7733S in excellent mechanical condition. The chronograph starts, stops, and resets as it should, winding is smooth, and all functions work as they should. Service history is unknown.
Bracelet/Strap: A like new vintage style brown leather strap is included.
Accessories: None. Sold as watch only.
