The Rolex Submariner needs to introduction. It's one of the most important watches ever made, cemented in cool since James Bond first donned one in 1962's Dr. No. It's also the watch most enthusiasts have mentally correlated with the term "tool watch" and for good reason. Watches in the 1960s were built to be used hard and often while remaining reliable and Rolex has led that segment for decades. It helps that the balanced, uncluttered dial has become a watch design icon, copied by hordes over the years but never replicated with the charm and precision as the original. Now back to that whole tool thing. These watches were made to take a beating, and many of them had their fair share of mishaps before watches were considered solely a luxury product. Watches that have survived those times, living with the scars to tell their story for them, while retaining their original beauty, are what we love most about vintage watches.
This 5513 is the last of the plexi crystal Submariners and the one of the first with a glossy dial. This piece is unique in that the dial has developed an interesting and unique "spidered" patina. Often these dials have cracked laquer, a result of Rolex not ironing out the composition of their dial lacquer when they first transitioned to the gloss style dials. This dial is very unique in that it does not show the typical large cracks, but hundreds of tiny "webbing" lines that give the dial an almost matte appearance when not under direct light. It's safe to say the patina on this dial is completely unique and very attractive, as the hour markers and their surrounds are unaffected.
This 5513 is in great shape and ready to wear for many years to come.
Condition is per the photos and as follows:
Case: 40mm case with a 9M serial number indicating circa 1986 production. Case has been previously polished but has thick lugs with clear lug chamfers.
Bezel: 60 click bidirectional bezel in good condition with sharp teeth as shown. The bezel pip, which appears to be tritium, does not look to be original as the surround is worn as pictured.
Dial/Hands: Original dial and hands. The black dial has a pleasing "webbed" patina across the glossy surface as described above.
Crystal: Domed acrylic crystal in excellent condition free of any major wear.
Caseback: Original caseback in very good condition as shown.
Movement: Original Rolex automatic movement in excellent condition that winds, runs, and sets time as it should. Timekeeping is excellent although service history is unknown.
Bracelet: 93150 fliplock bracelet in good condition. One end link appears to be a service replacement as indicated by the size of the stamping on the underside.
Accessories: None, sold as watch only.
