California-based Devon Works turned the watch world on its head in 2010 with the debut of the Tread 1, a hulking watch with a patented legible belt time display system and an electromechanical movement running off a battery rather than a traditional mainspring. The watch's design was truly groundbreaking, and despite being battery powered, the Tread 1 was a finalist in 2010's Geneva Grand Prix in the Design and Concept Watch category, an accolade any watch company would be proud have on their resume, especially an American one (as Devon was the first). Many considered the Tread wearable contemporary art and an exercise in industrial design.
The ingenuity of the Tread 1 came with a a few caveats, mostly that is was just absolutely gigantic, and it also cost a fortune at $17,500. So Devon decided to refine the design a bit, making a more wearable version of its belt-display watch, and out came the Tread 2.
The Tread 2 builds upon the masterful industrial design of the Tread 1 with a new, more wearable 44mm case that curves to fit the wrist. A brushed bezel provides contrast to the polished case and is affixed with eight fasteners.
The star of the show is the skeletonized display, featuring Devon's patented Time Belts technology. The display employs two reinforced nylon belts with hours and minutes printed on the surface. The concept is one from aviation, where similar belts are used in cockpit instrumentation boards. Reading the time on the belts is easy and quite intuitive: Hour digits scroll by on the horizontal belt while minutes tick away on the vertical one.
The Tread 2's “hybrid” system uses belts mounted on a central chassis and driven by two tiny microstep motors which, in addition to all the watch’s other functions, are driven by a tiny microcontroller powered by a rechargable, 14 day reserve battery. The battery is charged through an induction platform directly inside the box.
The Tread 2 also expanded on the 1 in functionality. The redesigned crown lever allows not only standard timekeeping, but also a running seconds feature as well as a chronograph function.
Our example of the Tread 2 is in excellent condition with only very minor signs of wear, and comes as a complete set with all of the original boxes and paperwork.
Take a look at the detailed photos and condition description below:
Case & Bezel: 44mm stainless steel case in excellent condition as pictured. The case has only minor surface marks consistent with cautious wear.
Dial/Hands: Skeletonized patented Time Belts display in perfect condition with no marks or wear.
Caseback: Steel and sapphire serialized caseback in excellent condition. There is a small discoloration on the left side of the back that does not affect any function of the watch.
Crystal: Original curved sapphire crystal in perfect condition.
Movement: Patented Time Belts display using fiberglass reinforced nylon belts to display the time. The watch has timekeeping, running seconds, chronograph, power reserve, and "sleep" modes, all of which function perfectly. The battery has a 14 day power reserve and is rechargable through the included induction charging station inside the box.
Bracelet/Strap: Original leather strap in good condition with plenty of life left along with the original stainless steel buckle.
Accessories: Original double box set with induction charger, along with the paperwork and manuals. This is a full set.
