Vintage Heuer Skipper Yachting Chronograph Ref. 15640 Caliber 15 - SOLD
We have a huge soft spot for quirky vintage chronographs, especially ones with unique or obscure uses. It doesn't get more quirky than the Heuer Skipper, an unusual tool watch designed and built for yacht racing, featuring a large, colorful 15-minute counter for tracking the countdown start of a yacht race. The red, white and blue sub-dial is separated in five minute segments, each marking a period in the lead up to a regatta to allow skippers to gain every second of advantage as possible.
The Skipper went through a handful of variants over a span of decades but remains a very low production and uncommon model from the Heuer lineup. Heuer borrowed cases from other models for the Skipper since not many were produced. The original "Skippererra" used a Carrera case, then the compressor-style straight lug Autavia cases, and lastly the famous cushion shape Autavia cases was hole of the last Skipper examples. As such, the cases bear Autavia reference number markings between the lugs despite the Skipper having its own reference number.
This example of the Skipper, the reference 15640, features that popular cushion case from a 11063 Autavia and a modified Caliber 15 automatic movement to make use of the 15-minute subdial. This watch is in outstanding condition, with a perfect glossy black dial and an extremely crisp unpolished case with its signature radial brushed finish.
Condition is as follows:
Case: 42mm stainless steel case in excellent condition. The radial brushing on the case top is still crisp as are the polished case chamfers. All case edges are sharp and the case appears unpolished.
Bezel: Steel 60 click outer bezel is original and excellent condition. 60 minute insert is also in excellent condition as pictured with minimal wear.
Dial/Hands: Original glossy black dial with white applied markers with tritium inserts. The tritium has aged to a light, creamy even patina. Hands are original painted white steel steel with tritium that matches the hour markers. The dial is outstanding and free of any staining or spotting.
Caseback: Excellent condition solid stainless steel screw caseback marked inside with Brevet numbers and signed Heuer Leonidas.
Crystal: Excellent mineral glass crystal free from any noticeable scratches, chips, or marks.
Movement: Heuer caliber 15 automatic chronograph movement with all functions working correctly including start, stop, and reset to zero of the chronograph. The movement keeps excellent time. Watch was just serviced in September 2019.
Bracelet/Strap: Original rare jubilee-style bracelet with signed buckle in excellent condition as pictured. Buckle has strong, crisp logo and bracelet shows moderate stretch.
Accessories: None, sold as watch only.
