Vintage Girard Perregaux Gyrodate Ref. 9080 w/ Howes Signed Dial
We love unique watches here at Luxuwrist, especially vintage pieces with quirky complications. The Girard Perregaux Gryodate certainly falls under the umbrella of unique. A rather scarce model, the reference 9080 pictured here is a paragon of mid 1960s watch design; a sharp 35mm stainless steel case, the peculiar calendar complication, and a charm that captures the spirit of the era.
This Gyrodate can tell you the day and date of an entire month without a mechanical complication added to the movement, increasing complexity and service costs. Just line up the "1" on the rotating bezel to the corresponding day of the week on the fixed internal bezel to reveal the calendar for the month.
What makes this example of the Gyrodate even more special is the dual-signed dial by the original retailer, B.D. Howes and Son, a high end jewelery store founded in California in 1919 that has become most well known in the watch world for their dual-signed Patek Phillipes fetching hefty premiums at large auction houses. Howes retailed other brands, including Girard Perregaux, and this example of the Gyrodate was originally retailed by Howes and bears their mark on the dial. This small but critical detail takes this watch from a seldom-seen reference to an incredibly rare and unique piece.
The watch appears totally original save the crown which appears to be a service replacement. The watch shows some marks on the surface of the acrylic crystal, and wear on the bezel. The midcase is razor sharp and shows no signs of polishing, although there is mark on the caseback portion of the inner case as shown in the photos.
Take a look at our detailed photos and the condition rundown below.
Case: 35mm two-piece case (exc. crown) in excellent condition. The case is unpolished and retains its original finish with incredibly sharp lines and chamfers throughout. The caseback of the inner case dows show an indentation as shown in the photos. Crown appears to be a service replacement.
Dial/Hands: Original dial and handset are in excellent condition as shown. The lightly textured white dial has raised polished indices at 12, 6, and 9, with black markers and text on the rest of the dial. All dial text is crisp and clear, as is the original dual signature from the original retailer Howes. The original hands are also in excellent condition and have black inserts matching the dial.
Crystal: Original acrylic crystal that shows minor signs of wear as shown in the photos. Cyrtsal is free of cracking or crazing.
Movement: Original Girard Perregaux Caliber 32 automatic movement with date in excellent condition with the watch keeping excellent time and all functions working as they should. The service history is unknown.
Bracelet/Strap: Like new brown leather strap with stainless steel buckle as shown in the photos.
Box/Papers/Accessories: None. Sold as watch only.
