Like so many of Rolex's iconic models, the GMT Master was born out of necessity. In the early 1950s, Rolex collaborated with Pan-Am to develop a watch for commercial air pilots. With advancements in technology and longer flight times, pilots needed to be able to track changes in time zones along their routes. The watch debuted with the now iconic blue and red "Pepsi" bezel, which still remains the most popular bezel color combination to this day.
Our reference 16700 embodies the spirit of the original GMT Master with the benefits of modern technology. This outstanding example has a thick unpolished case with only very slight signs of wear, the iconic Pepsi bezel with great faded patina, and a nearly stretch-free Oyster bracelet. This GMT Master is ready to strap on and keep time anywhere in the world for many years to come.
Case: Outstanding condition 40 mm stainless steel case with no dings, dents, or deep scratches. This watch is an R series indicating production in 1987. The case has sharp edges and appears to be unpolished.
Bezel: Original bidirectional Pepsi bezel in excellent condition with only very sparse surface scratches on the painted surfaces. The red portion of the bezel has faded slightly into a lighter red color.
Dial/Hands: Original tritium dial and hands in flawless condition. The date disc features open sixes and nines.
Caseback: Excellent condition original caseback showing the original factory finish
Crystal: Original sapphire crystal with no scratches or chips.
Movement: Caliber 3175 Rolex Automatic GMT movement in excellent condition keeping outstanding time within two seconds per day.
Bracelet/Strap: Original 78360 bracelet showing no significant stretch and comes with 12 links to fit up to an 8” wrist.
Accessories: Original box, chronometer hang tag, cardholder, and translation booklet.
